Leishmaniasis is a group of chronic diseases cause by parasitics protozoa of different species belonging to the genus leishmania.
Leishmaniasis can be classified into Visceral, Cutaneous and Mucocutaneous.
Visceral leishmaniasis is systemic in nature in which liver become septic.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis causes 1-200 simple skin leions.
According to WHO report there as 12 million people are currently infected and a further 367 million are at risk of leishmaniasis in 88 countries, 72 of which are developing countries and 16 of them are among the least developed in the world.
Hence linking leishmaniasis to poverty, and various environmental changes such as urbanization, migration of people into endemic areas and building of dams etc.
